Best Steam Cleaner Review 2020

Sometimes vacuuming just isn’t enough. It will get the surface dirt out of your carpet. Vacuums may not be able to reach the embedded dirt inside the carpet, however. In order to have the cleanest carpets possible, try one of the best steam cleaners.

If you are not familiar with and overwhelmed by choosing a steam cleaner for carpet, never fear. We are here to provide you all the information you need. Continue reading for more information about steam cleaners.

You first need to know the definition and purpose of a steam cleaner for carpet. These handy machines come in a variety of sizes and models. They all have one purpose: to clean your carpet or upholstery. Actually steam cleaners can do more than that. Many steam cleaners work on a variety of surfaces.

Steam cleaners use steam to clean your carpet. How this steam is produced varies. No matter what type of steam cleaner you choose, it will not use chemicals.

Unlike carpet cleaners, they do not use water either. This makes them much more portable. It also reduces the risk of mold or mildew. Carpets that have been carpet cleaned take a long time to dry. You may have to use fans to speed the process. Steam cleaned carpets dry much faster. Steam evaporates at a quicker rate than water.

The steam is also quite powerful. It can often peel the wallpaper off your walls. Some steam cleaners will even allow you to clean grout.

Steam cleaners are clearly versatile machines. Any home could use one. To learn more about these amazing machines, keep reading.

Steam cleaner vs. Vacuum cleaner

There is a similarity in their names. Yet, steam cleaners and vacuum cleaners are not the same thing. They both clean carpet and other floors. The way they clean is significantly different.

Vacuum cleaners clean by using suction. Steam cleaners use steam to loosen dirt and debris from surfaces. They do not actually remove the dirt. When you use a steam cleaner, you still need to vacuum or wipe down the surface of the carpet.

What follows are the other main differences between a vacuum cleaner and steam cleaner:

  • Vacuum cleaners are not as dangerous as steam cleaners. If steam gets on your skin, it can cause painful burns. Vacuum cleaners do not have this risk.
  • Steam cleaners are much more versatile than vacuum cleaners. They will work on a variety of surfaces. Vacuum cleaners typically only work on carpet and hard floors.
  • Steam cleaners clean much deeper than vacuum cleaners. Steam cleaners are usually smaller than vacuum cleaners or carpet cleaners. You will need to reserve them for spot cleaning. Vacuums can be used to clean your entire home.
  • Steam cleaners are generally less expensive than vacuum cleaners. They are much less expensive than carpet cleaners. This price difference does not extend to professional carpet steam cleaners. Those models tend to be very expensive.

Different types of steam cleaners

There are two main types of steam cleaners: cool steam and dry steam. Cool steam carpet cleaners use steam to clean different surfaces. They make their steam without boiling water. Cool steam cleaners are recommended if you have children. They will not cause burns. They are not as dangerous to use as dry steam cleaners.

Dry steam cleaners are the more traditional type of steam cleaner for carpets. These products make their steam by boiling water. Dry steam cleaners are the dangerous type. We do not recommend these products for homes with young children.

Steam cleaners for carpet can also come in two different sizes: upright or handheld. Handheld steamers are made to be carried. They are not heavy. They are also super portable. All you have to do is keep water in the tank. You will be ready to clean any time. The water tank will be much smaller than on the larger upright steam cleaners.

Upright steam cleaners look very similar to upright vacuum cleaners. These products are much less portable. Their large size allows them to steam clean more area. Upright steam cleaners will also run longer on a single tank of water.

What’s the best steam cleaner?

If you are ready to invest in a great steam cleaner, you need to recognize the top products. Your preferences will make your choice a personal decision. You will need to keep all of the following features in mind.

  • The top steam cleaners for laminate floors should clean multiple surfaces. Even steam cleaners for hardwood floors should work on multiple types of floors.
  • The steam cleaner with attachments should be easy to use. They should be lightweight, ergonomic, and easy to clean. You shouldn’t have to struggle to use the steam cleaner.
  • Your steam cleaner should be affordable for you. Get the most for your money, no matter the product.
  • The top steam cleaners for tile floors should run a long time. They should not need their water tank refilled too often. You shouldn’t have to refill the water tank every five minutes. The top products give 30 minutes to an hour of cleaning time.

Features to look for when buying a steam cleaner

Ready to invest in a great steam cleaner? You need to know what to look for in the top products. Your preferences will be completely personal. You will still need to keep all of the following features in mind.

Like vacuums, steam cleaners come with different accessories. Some of the professional carpet steam cleaners come with a large number of accessories. Entry-level steam cleaners may only have one or two accessories.

The most common accessories are steam jets, mops, squeegees, brushes, and nozzles. The top steam cleaners for carpet also include a measuring cup and microfiber pads. You may find products that include a carrying case as well.

The number of accessories you need will vary. Using the steam cleaner to clean up spills or clean upholstery means you only need a couple accessories. If you plan on using the steam cleaner as a multi-purpose machine, you need many accessories.

Tank size

The size of steam cleaners for carpets varies greatly. That includes the size of the water tank. Water tank size is important. The larger the water tank, the more cleaning time you have.

Larger steam cleaners also tend to be more powerful. Purchasing a product with a larger water tank means you likely have a more powerful product overall.

The larger steam cleaners are not going to be very portable. They will be too large. You won't be able to use them outside of your home. For a portable steam cleaner, try one with a small water tank.

Hose length

Steam cleaners have a tank body. There is also a hose with a cleaning head that does the cleaning. The length of the product’s hose will vary. Some steam cleaners even come with hose extensions.

Always consider where you plan on using the steam cleaner for carpets. Exclusively using it on floors means you don't need a long hose. Using the steam cleaner for wall or window cleaning requires a product with a long hose or hose extension.

Power cord length

There are not really any cordless steam cleaner options. You will need to plug the steam cleaner into a wall outlet. If you have a larger home, moving the plug may become an issue. Make sure to look for a product with a long power cord.

Weight is another very important consideration. You will need to be able to move the machine easily. Homes with stairs will require a portable steam cleaner.

Consider the strength of everyone who will be using the steam cleaner. Children will require a lighter product than adults. It doesn’t do you any good to purchase a steam cleaner only you can use.

Handheld steamers for cleaning are generally lighter than upright steam cleaners. They are designed to be carried, so are lightweight. Upright steam cleaners are more powerful, and will be heavier.

Your final consideration should be cost. Steam cleaners tend to be more affordable than vacuums. You will still need to look for a product that falls in your budget.

Most steam cleaners fall in the $100-$200 range. You can find professional carpet steam cleaners that go for much more. We recommend writing your budget first. Then  look for a product that falls in that range. Doing this will help you get the most for your money.

How to use my steam cleaner?

How you use your steam cleaner will depend on the type of steam cleaner you’ve purchased. The first step is always to put water in the tank. You may also need to put carpet cleaner solution in the correct location as well.

The rest of our tips and tricks for steam cleaner use are as follows.

  1. Always wear shoes when using your steam cleaner. You don’t want to get the steam on your bare feet. Wearing goggles and protective clothing is also a good idea.
  2. Read your manual. Only use your steam cleaner for what it is designed to do.
  3. Once the water tank is filled, attach any accessories. Then plug in the machine.
  4. Make sure to keep the rest of the accessories in an accessible location. You should be able to easily change them if needed.
  5. Begin cleaning. You should only use the steam cleaner for spot cleaning. Use a carpet cleaner to deep clean an entire carpet.
  6. Only point the nozzle at the spot that needs to be cleaned. Dry steam cleaners produce very hot steam. It can cause burns or kill plants. Never point the cleaning head at a location that can't handle steam.
  7. Once you are done, wipe it down the area with a clean rag. This will remove the dirt the steam cleaner removed from the carpet. Then unplug the machine and put it back in its storage location. Always store the steam cleaner for carpet with all of its accessories. That way nothing gets lost. You don’t have to look for it every time you need to use it.

Do I need a steam mop or a traditional steam cleaner?

There are multiple types of steam cleaner available. The most common types are handheld, cylinder, vapor, and steam mop. Each of these four come with its own pros and cons. They each clean your floors in a unique way.

The most traditional type of steam cleaner is the cylinder steam cleaner. This type uses water for a “wet” steam clean. It is less expensive than the “dry” clean. The cylinder steam cleaner is much larger than a handheld steam cleaner.

What about the steam mop? Steam mops look and work very similarly to a stick vacuum. They have an upright design and are lightweight. You will typically find steam mop cleaners for hardwood floors. They may be designed for carpet use as well. Those are harder to find, however.

Steam mops and a traditional steam cleaners tend to be similar in price. The steam mop cleaner will be more efficient and eco-friendly. You don’t have to use detergents or chemicals with it. It is an ideal choice for homes with lots of hardwood floors.

You will likely need a steam mop cleaner if you have a lot of hard flooring. Messes that are fairly normal and irregular require a steam mop cleaner. If you have a very messy home, then a traditional multi-purpose steam cleaner is ideal. Lots of messes to clean need a traditional steam cleaner for carpet.

How a carpet steam cleaner works

The answer to this question varies a bit. It depends on the type of steam cleaner for floors you choose. We can still, however, give you a general overview of how steam cleaners work. All steam cleaners have things in common. For example, they all use water vapor to clean.

Water is somehow heated to past its boiling point. It is then converted into pressurized steam by the value steam cleaner. As you move the steam cleaner along the surface of the floor, it lets out the pressurized steam. That water vapor causes dirt to shake loose from the carpet. It also kills dust mites, mold, and other allergens.

It is important to remember that steam cleaners do not use suction. You may want to immediately wipe the cleaned surfaces down with a dry towel. You can also let the steam evaporate away and then use a vacuum.

How to use a steam cleaner

Using a steam cleaner does not have to be a hard proposition. If you can use a vacuum, you can use a steam cleaner. The biggest difference a steam cleaner and a vacuum is the steam. This creates some safety considerations. Below we’ve listed the top tips and tricks for staying safe. We also tell you how to use the steam cleaner effectively.

  • Always wear shoes. You don’t want the steam to get on your bare feet. It could cause burns.
  • Only ever use the steam cleaner for cleaning. Never let children use it until they are old enough to handle it safely.
  • Fill the water tank and attach accessories before plugging in the steam cleaner.
  • Then you can plug in the steam cleaner for home and turn it on.
  • Push the trigger to release the steam. It will take a couple of seconds for the steam to stop after you release the trigger. Give the steam time to stop before touching the nozzle. Keep the trigger pressed as you clean.
  • Use the steam cleaner for home on the surface that needs to be cleaned. Large jobs may require that you refill the water tank. Make sure the steam cleaner is turned off and unplugged before removing the tank.
  • When you are done, wait for any damp surfaces to dry. You may want to go over the floor with a dry towel. Otherwise, let it air dry.
  • Always store the steam cleaner with all of its accessories. This ensures that you never lose a component.

The many steam cleaner options can be overwhelming. In this FAQ section, we give you questions to ask yourself. These questions will make your buying process easier.

How much traffic does my carpet receive?

First, you will need to determine how much traffic your carpet receives. This information is crucial for your overall steam cleaner purchase. The more traffic your carpet receives, the dirty it will be and the more cleaning it will need. Thus, your choice of steam cleaner with vacuum will be different than a less well-traveled carpet.

Although you should vacuum your carpets on a weekly or biweekly basis, you do not have to steam clean them that much. If you have carpets in a high traffic area, it will need to be cleaned with your steam cleaner for home at least every year—more if the room gets a lot of mess. If your carpet is in a less occupied room, you may be able to get away with cleaning it once every 18 months or so. This, of course, does not take spot cleaning into account, which is a great argument for owning your own professional carpet steam cleaner.

What kind of carpet am I going to be cleaning?

As you have learned in our other articles about carpet, there are many different types available. Therefore, you will need to be aware of the type of carpet you have before you purchase your next steam cleaner for upholstery.

The first way to differentiate carpet is by their material. There are a few types of popular carpet materials. These can be broken into two groups: natural and synthetic. The most well-known natural carpet material is wool. You can steam clean wool carpet without any problems, just be careful in using any products on the carpet. Plus, you will want to ensure that the wool carpet dries completely. Setting up fans and opening windows will speed up the air-drying process.

Synthetic carpet materials include polyester, triexta, olefin, and nylon. These carpets are much more affordable, and typically resist stains better than wool. Steam cleaning is not a problem for synthetic carpet materials. In fact, it is often much easier to get these types of carpet clean than with wool.

Another distinction in carpet that you will need to consider when purchasing a steam cleaner for carpet is the pile length. Pile refers to the height of the material fibers. High pile carpet can be hard to steam clean with traditional steam cleaners because of the length of the pile. Therefore, you will need to be especially careful when purchasing a steam cleaner for carpet that has a high pile.

On the other hand, a low pile carpet is easier to clean with a professional carpet steam cleaner. However, it is usually a very dense type of carpet. This means that you will need to ensure your steam cleaner makes enough steam to enter the dense fibers of the carpet.

What quality of carpet am I cleaning?

Quality of the value steam cleaner is important, but so is the quality of the carpet you will be cleaning. Higher quality carpet is generally more durable and will stand up better to the high temperatures of steam cleaning. You will also probably be able to clean it better and easier than a lower quality carpet.

With budget, or low, quality carpet, you will have to be very careful about potentially damaging the fibers. Finding a budget steam cleaner may be harder, as you will need once with variable temperature control. Also, you will need to clean the carpet gently and take care not to give it too much moisture, for it is unlikely to dry as quickly.

How much carpet do I need to clean regularly?

Another big consideration in the type of steam cleaner to remove pet stains that you have to think about is how much carpet you plan on cleaning regularly. As mentioned above, steam cleaners come in a variety of types. Each type is best for a specific amount of floor space.

For example, the steam cleaner handheld is great for spot cleaning small areas. However, if you have a lot of carpet in a mudroom or foray that needs to be steam cleaned regularly, a handheld product will not work well. Also, steam mop cleaners are really best for hardwood floors; you need specific attachments to use them on the carpet.

If you have a lot of carpets to steam clean regularly, you should consider either a vapor or cylindrical steam cleaner. These are the most traditional sized, multi-purpose steam cleaners available. They have the power capabilities and cleaning path sizes that will allow you to clean large areas well. Therefore, you always need to consider the size of the area to be cleaned when picking a steam cleaner for floors.

How much cleaning does my carpet manufacturer recommend?

Different carpet manufacturers recommend different cleaning requirements for their carpets. These numbers may even change depending on the line of carpet you purchase from the manufacturer. Thus, you always need to read the warranty and product information because you begin steam cleaning your new carpet.

As an example, Mohawk—the manufacturer of SmartStrand carpet and many other popular brands—recommends carpet cleaning every 12-18 months. They also say that you should take traffic and other factors in mind when considering how often to carpet cleaners. However, if the Mohawk carpet does not get that much use and stays relatively clean, then you should follow the manufacturer’s 12-18 month recommend. This ensures that the carpet wears well and stays nice for a long time.

Is dodging furniture and getting tight against walls a factor?

Some steam cleaners for home are more moveable than others. All can be pushed along the floor. But, some will extend to fit under furniture or in tight corners. If you will be maneuvering the professional carpet steam cleaner a lot around furniture or against walls, then you need a more versatile product.

The most maneuverable steam cleaner for carpet will be the steam mop cleaners. Because of their slim profile, these products can fit almost anywhere. However, if you do not need that versatility, then you may want to go with a more traditional steam cleaner.

What’s the klutz factor in our household?

By this, we mean that if there are a lot of spills or accidental messes in your home, you may want a larger steam cleaner. Homes with lots of klutzes will not do well with a small steam cleaner with handheld. You will need the largest steam cleaner for home you can find.

Other mess factors that have nothing to do with klutziness are the number of pets and children in your home. The more pets and children, the more likely you will need a heavy-duty steam cleaner.

How much storage space do we have?

One big problem with the large, traditional steam cleaners for vinyl floors is that they are harder to store. People who live in a smaller space or who like things neat and tidy will want to look for a steam cleaner with accessories that is very storable.

In general, the smaller the steam cleaner, the easier it will be to store. Steam mop cleaners are especially easy to store. Some fold down and almost all have on-board storage for their accessories. However, if you are short on storage space, then you will want to stay away from the large, traditional multi-purpose steam cleaners.

What healthy household issues do we face?

If you're living in a home where people have health issues like allergies or asthma, then you will want to be super careful about the steam cleaner you purchase. Overall steam cleaners are great because they do kill off bacteria, dust mites, and other irritants. Thus, steam cleaners will help you keep your allergies and asthma in check.

One thing to keep in mind on the topic of steam cleaners and health is that mold can develop on the wet surfaces if they are not dried properly. This is the biggest issue people have with steam cleaners for upholstery. Yet, it doesn’t have to be an issue. Either run fans and open windows to speed up the drying process, or hand dry the cleaned area yourself.

How frequently will I be willing to clean the carpet?

Overall, you will need to decide how much you will be willing to steam your carpet. If you do not like doing this type of cleaning, then you may want to stick with a vacuum and hire out professional carpet steaming. Because you will probably only need to clean your carpet, hiring a professional cleaning service may be the more cost-effective option.

If, on the other hand, you enjoy cleaning your carpet—or, at least you’re willing to clean it on a regular basis, then purchasing your own steam cleaner is a good idea. Just make sure to purchase a high-powered one, as it will clean your carpet much quicker. And, if standing over your carpet pushing a steam cleaner for home all day is not your idea of fun—is it anyone? —then the larger and more effective the steam cleaner for carpet, the sooner you will be able to get on with your life.
