What is a floor sweeper?
Floor sweepers are not as common as they once were. You may not have seen one since you were a child. Or, you may have never seen one at all. No worries. Here we will tell you everything you need to know about floor sweepers.
The floor sweeper is also occasionally called the carpet sweeper. You may have actually read a review of ours about that product. Carpet and floor sweepers were both precursors to the electric vacuum. They consist of a small box cleaning head that contains rollers and brushes. The dirt container is also usually in the small box. A large pole or handle attaches to the box. It is used to push the manual floor sweeper around.
The manual floor sweeper was originally developed by Melville R. Bissell in Grand Rapids, MI in 1876. Clearly this device has been around a long time. That it is still popular speaks to its versatility and effectiveness.
Today there are two main types of floor sweeper: manual and electric. All original heavy duty carpet sweepers were manual. You push the device along the floor. That action causes the wheels to turn and the product to clean your floor.
Manual floor sweepers can be a lot of work. Consider instead the electric floor sweeper. This product uses power to turn the brushes and clean your floor quicker.
Floor sweeper vs. Broom
You may be getting a little confused. The floor sweeper has likely begun to sound surprisingly like a broom. You are not wrong. There are actually a few very important differences between hardwood floor sweepers and brooms.
- Brooms have a series of fibers that are used to sweep the dirt and debris into a pile. The pile is then swept into a dust pan. You transport the dirt to the trashcan with the dust pan. Brooms are extremely common. So much so that we probably don’t need to go into any more detail about them.
- On the other hand, floor sweepers use brushes. The brushes turn like a vacuum. There are no straight fibers on a floor sweeper. Hardwood floor sweepers also come with their own dustbin. As the brushes turn they pull the dirt and debris into the dustbin. You just empty that bin into the trash.
- A hardwood floor sweeper is typically heavier than a broom.
- A manual floor sweeper will move very similarly to a broom. It will just be slightly larger. Again, there is that box at the bottom of the handle instead of straight fibers.
Floor sweeper vs. Vacuum
Okay, you may be saying, now the floor sweeper sounds like a vacuum. And, again, you are not wrong. It may be informative to think of the floor sweeper like a cross between a vacuum and a broom. In fact, the small box at the bottom is almost identical to a vacuum’s cleaning head.
There are still quite a few differences between these two products. The most important are listed below.
- Heavy duty carpet sweepers predated vacuums. Traditionally all floor sweepers were manual floor sweepers. Even electric floor sweepers are not as powerful as vacuums.
- No matter the floor sweeper, brushes pull the dirt into the dust bin. A vacuum does have brushes, but it collects dirt by using suction.
- A floor sweeper is ideal for picking up larger particles and debris. It will not handle fine dirt or messes well. It cannot be used on liquid messes. Most vacuums also only work on dry messes. They can handle fine particles of dirt of debris though.
- Most vacuums come with a variety of accessories. There are usually included crevice and dusting brushes. There may even be upholstery or pet tools as well. Floor sweepers do not come with these accessories. Not even commercial carpet sweepers have them. Instead, you get one cleaning head. In that way the floor sweeper is less versatile than the vacuum.
What to look for in a floor sweeper
Ready to purchase a floor sweeper? You need to know what to look for in the top products. That’s where this buyer’s guide comes in handy. The following features should be considered as you look for a floor sweeper.
Power or not
You will first have to decide whether you want a powered floor sweeper or not. Modern products are either manual floor sweepers or electric floor sweepers.
Manual floor sweepers do not use any power. You push the device along the floor. It is the movement that turns the brushes and cleans up the mess. Manual carpet sweepers are the most portable option. They do not have cords or need an outlet. All you have to do is move them to the mess and begin pushing. Manual floor sweepers require you to do all of the work.
Electric floor sweepers are powered. They can either be corded or cordless. Cordless floor sweepers use a rechargeable battery to draw their power. Corded products, obviously, have to be plugged into the wall. Because they are powered, electric floor sweepers tend to be noisy. They are still much less noisy than a vacuum or a carpet cleaner.
Cleaning path size
All floor cleaner have a cleaning path size. This is no different for the floor sweeper. The cleaning path is the width of the box with the brushes. This measurement is important. It tells you how much of your floor can be cleaned in one pass.
Industrial floor sweepers likely have the largest cleaning path. You can find commercial carpet sweepers with a decently sized cleaning path. You may not want tot go with the largest cleaning path you can find. Bigger isn’t always better, especially if you have a small home.
Fit the cleaning path size to the size of your home. Also consider how much time you want to spend sweeping. Larger products mean less passes.
Types of floors
We began this article with a discussion of the similarities between floor and carpet sweepers. There are many similarities. There are some small differences as well. Make sure you choose the product that is right for you.
Most floor sweepers should be able to clean all types of hardwood floors. These products also go by the name hardwood floor sweeper. Hardwood floor sweepers can sometimes clean low pile carpet as well.
If you have high pile carpet in your home, consider a dedicated heavy-duty carpet sweeper. Always pay attention to the recommended flooring types. That information will tell you how you can use your new floor sweeper.
Weight
Floor sweepers are much lighter than vacuums and carpet cleaners. You may not have to worry as much about weight. Most people should be able to push a manual floor sweeper around. Because manual floor sweepers do not use any power, they are the lightest type. They only usually weigh a pound or two.
Electric floor sweepers are going to be a little bit heavier. They will still probably only weigh two to five pounds. These weights should be fine for most people to handle.
Just remember to purchase a product that you can push for longer periods of time. Floor sweepers are typically used for spot cleaning. You will likely not have to use it for hours. You should still always be comfortable carrying and pushing the floor sweeper.
Indoor or outdoor
Many industrial floor sweepers are actually designed to be used outdoors. Restaurant employees cleaning the patio use an outdoor floor sweeper. Commercial carpet sweepers for the outdoors are usually larger and heavier. They will also have round, circular brushes. These brushes deep clean and sweep the outdoor areas.
This article focuses on indoor floor sweepers. These are small and light products. They can be used on small messes in your home. You should not use them to clean up your outdoor spaces. They are not large enough and will not handle the elements very well. For light messes inside your home, an inside floor sweeper is ideal.
Types of brushes or blades
Indoor floor sweepers comes with a number of different brush options. They fall into a couple of categories: brushed blades and brushless blades. Brushed blades just mean that there are brushes in the box. These brushes spin as the product moves along the floor. They work together to pick up the dirt and debris.
On the other hand, brushless products do not use a variety of brushes. These use rubber blades that move with the floor sweeper. The blades sweep the dirt and debris into the dirt collection bin. Use a brushless floor sweeper when you are cleaning tile, linoleum, hardwood, and low pile carpet.
